MAIN WORKSHOP TRAINING

THURS 21ST -& FRI 22ND MAY - 2 DAY WORKSHOP (11-17.00)

GENNADI BOGDANOV- BIOMECHANICS

About the workshop...

Biomechanics is an approach to actor training and to theatre developed by Russian actor, director and teacher, Vsevolod Meyerhold during the 1920’ and 1930’s. Biomechanics begins with physical training, the intention being to forge the connection between mind and body. This workshop will look at the preparatory training including, rhythm, space, geometry of movement, balance and physical control, basic principles of actor’s gesture construction and elements of Meyerholds classic etudes, highly stylised movement pieces.

About Gennnadi....

Gennadi Bogdanov is the founding director of the Moscow School of Theatrical Biomechanics and instructor of Biomechanics at the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS), the Moscow theatre school founded by Vseveld Meyerhold. Bogdanov developed his methods through extensive study with Nikolai Kustov, actor and teacher in Meyerhold's theatre. He worked for twenty years in the Moscow Academic Theater. An actor and movement director of more than 25 years experience, Bogdanov has taught Biomechanics all over the world and regularly teaches at Mime Centrum in Berlin and at the International Centre of Biomechanics in Italy. He was honoured in 1997 at Eugenio Barba's World Theatre Conference in Europe.

SAT 23RD AND SUN 24TH MAY - 2 DAY WORKSHOP (11- 17.00)

TMESIS THEATRE (FORMERLY KNOWN AS MOMENTUM) WORKSHOP

About the workshop...

Tmesis Theatre workshops introduce the company's powerful and experimental movement training,  exercises for body awareness, movement techniques and looks at physical methods in devising theatre and how improvisation can be used to create material as well as physical starting points for creating characters. Tmesis Theatre's strong physical style of theatre and training methods have been enriched by their challenging collaborations with Derevo and Pina Bausch Tanztheater for the production of Memento Mori and Anima. The workshops are well known for teaching the participants ways to push their barriers through training and improvisation.

About Tmesis Theatre...

Yorgos Karamalegos and Elinor Randle met at Hope Street's Physical Theatre Programme in 2002. Together they formed the company in 2003 and created their first piece "Tmesis" which is re- launching  at this year’s festival.

The company style is a strong expressive body language that combines the art of movement/dance with a comic-tragic style of acting, creating theatre accessible to its audience even if the story is abstractly approached. Momentum have brought together some of the best national and international directors/practitioners from the physical theatre world to produce innovative, visually stunning, thought provoking and evocative pieces. The trilogy of Tmesis, Memento Mori and Anima has toured nationally and internationally to critical acclaim. Anima was a Commission of Liverpool Culture Company and a part of the 2008 artistic programme.

MON 25TH TO WED 27TH MAY - 3 DAY WORKSHOP (11-16.00)

JEAN LAURENT SASPORTES (PINA BAUSCH TANZTHEATER)

About the workshop...

The workshop has a technical and creative part. Some elements in the technical part are; feet and the floor, verticality, balance, lengthen and release of muscle chains, articulation, release, and lengthening of the body lines and various body work techniques from dance, Tai chi, Kinomichi, and Feldenkrais. The workshop part is based on the study of the five elements of movement analysis; The Form, Space, Motion, Timing and The rest and essential thing (or “the little flower” from Zeami). Each of those elements is studied separately; then in connection with each other. First of all from an abstract point of view then closing more to an everyday life situation. From this base a use of movement and gesture evolve, which integrates itself into dance, dance theatre, theatre or opera. The largest part of this work is based on improvisation and composition.

Jean’s workshop is suitable for non- dancers and dancers.

   About Jean...

Jean-Laurent Sasportes studied dance and has practised Kinomichi (with M. Noro, founder of Kinomichi and of the International Kinomichi Center in Paris) and Tai Chi for more than twenty years. From 1979- 1996 Jean was a solo dancer in the Pina Bausch Company, dfdffsffs he still guests as a soloist for the repertory pieces but now dedicates himself mainly to his own work. Jean works as an actor, dancer, dance teacher, choreographer for theatre, dance theatre and opera, works on duets with musicians, he is artistic director of the Ikonclaste festival in Wuppertal and has recently formed a dance theatre company with Malou Airaudo called CafeAda.

Tmesis was first made in 2003 and has toured nationally and internationally, the company have re-worked their successful first piece for two performers for Physical Fest. Striking visuals, acrobatics, movement and music combine in this beautiful ancient Greek story of the origin of love and the reason why we search for our other half.

Tmesis is based on Aristophanes speech from Plato's Symposium about the origin of love and it takes you back to the time where there were three different sexes, the man the woman and the hermaphrodite.

These eight-limbed creatures with two heads and the conflict with Gods and its power is a mesmerising evolutionary journey from the ancient Greek years to the modern man.

INTERROGATIONS

"Yoshi Oida shows how the mysteries and secrets of performance are inseparable from a precise, concrete and detailed science learned in the heat of experience. The vital lessons he passes on to us are told with such lightness and grace that typically the difficulties become invisible"

Peter Brook

"We are proud to host for a second time at our festival the big master of theatre Yoshi Oida"

Tmesis Theatre

The Koan is a collection of « words » written by Zen Masters and conserved in Chinese monasteries between then 11th and 13th centuries. In Japan today, Zen Buddhism continues, and in the meditation in the Rinzai sect, the master will ask questions on the ‘words’ of the Koan. To find a response to a question may take several years, may be even a lifetime… During the early 1960s, I travelled the world with Peter Brook’s experimental company, encountering audiences of every type and culture, Always asking key questions such as “What it Theatre? With Interrogations, I am returning to the spirit of those years of travelling, encountering, and creating, using the texts of the Koan as a starting point.
