THE WORKSHOPS

BUTOH - BODY OF TRANSFORMATION

MARIE-GABRIELLE ROTIE

TUES 30TH / WED 31ST MAY (£55)

This workshop is suitable for anyone of any age with an interest in movement and no prior experience is necessary. Participants should however be in a general state of good health.

Butoh acts as a radical challenge and catalyst for a deep and personal enquiry into the moving body. Butoh is not about doing movement but about being moved. Concentration is turned inward, away from the external mirror image of the body, to encourage a deep connection to the origin and impulses for movement. The body can discover many selves and extend into animal, plant or non-human entities. Each day begins with intensive body training incorporating wave, spiral and circular movement patterns allied to breath and voice. Group and solo structures allow exploration of the fluid interface between inner and outer space and time to enjoy the delicious quality of slow motion work allied to working with dynamic energy and impulses.

Marie-Gabrielle Rotie studied Fine Art and then Dance, encountering Butoh in 1992. She has studied with over 25 Butoh teachers in Japan and Europe and collaborated extensively with Ko Murobushi. Regularly funded by the Arts Council of England she has created works in performance and installation, touring the UK and internationally. Stage works include for The Place Theatre, Laban, Royal Opera House and Royal National Theatre. Commissions include for The Place Prize in 2004, several community education projects for Chisenhale Dance Space. Commissioned by International Almaida Dance Festival, she is creating a work for Portuguese dancers, premiering November 2006. Commercial choreography includes for Sir Peter Hall’s ‘Bacchai’ at RNT (2002) and for Armonica Consort ‘Fairy Queen’ (2003). She is director of Butoh UK. www.rotieproductions.com

CONTACT IMPROVISATION

ANDREA BUCKLEY

THURS 1ST JUNE (£30)

Andrea Buckly approaches teaching in a relaxed and supportive way to allow the dancing to spontaneously and effortlessly arise. Participants can fully engage in the process of improvisation and contact work using the tools of listening, watching, exploring and expressing the body into the physical form of dancing fully. From solo to group work the landscape of anatomical imagery will aim to increase creative potential, self awareness, survival mode in the body and energy flow through the heightened observation of our senses.

Andrea Buckley is a freelance dance artist. Improvisation and contact work has been the main source of inspiration and after a 3 year Diploma course at the Laban Centre, London she went on to work with independent choreographers and companies on a project basis. Andrea has travelled abroad to specialise within the improvisation and contact field.

She is involved in presenting projects with CH4PTER and Liverpool Improvisation Collective. Currently Andrea is researching a new solo performance piece with video artist Danny Williams and is a visiting lecturer at Hope University, Liverpool.
