• “Desert Story2” is a solo piece first created for the Cloud dance festival in Berlin. Devised and performed by Selina Papoutseli. Duration 20 minutes.

Followed by drinks and socialising @ ground floor of Hope Street Ltd.

SELINA PAPOUTSELI - Butoh (SOLD OUT)

Wednesday 4th June 2008, 11am - 5pm

In the one day workshop she will introduce elements of Butoh dance working mainly with presence and the concept of time, with exercises that focus on body awareness and sensitivity and using imagery as a means to discover body mechanisms that can alter the perception of time and space.

BIOGRAPHY

Selina Papoutseli is a London based Greek performer. She trained with Philippe Gaullier, Adon Adassinsky, Kazuo Ohno, Min Tanaka, Masaki, Iwana and Mladen Materic. She formed the company Petra’s Pulse which focuses on the exploration of objects and bodies in relation to space and time, creating visual narratives. Other work includes collaborations with Peruvian company Lot Performance, Metis Arts, Song theatre, Chris Goode and Signal to Noise. Thursday 5th - Friday 6th June 2008, 10:30am - 5pm

Ira is an international actor, director and teacher who has worked with Australian Opera, Bell Shakespeare Company, Cirque du Soleil, Company Collisions, Frank Theatre, FrankenKlowns.

Suzuki Tadashi saw the power of the classical training of Noh and Kabuki as a simplified and clear way for contemporary actors to learn grounding, personal power, ensemble consciousness, mythological acting, and directly releasing ones natural animal energy.

Ira found that there are universal principles in acting and theatre, these principles are articulated in Quantum Theatre: Slapstick to Shakespeare. The main practical principle is the Principle of Four, the active practice and integration of body-voice-performance-creativity.

All of Suzuki's exercises use the Principle of Four. This workshop will introduce the main classic basic exercises of Suzuki's work and will utilize the Quantum Theatre approach to communicate the vital Principle of Four.

Creative partner Marie-Soleil Fortin will assist Ira in this workshop.

TMESIS THEATRE WORKSHOP (SOLD OUT)

Momentum

Saturday 7th June 2008, 10am - 5pm

TMESIS THEATREwill introduce a series of movement training and exercises for body awareness, movement techniques, and partner work and theatre improvisation. This workshop will be focusing on Momentum’s physical devising methods and how improvisation can be used to create theatre material and will research into a strong expressive body language. The company's training technique is enriched by their recent collaborations with Derevo and Pina Bausch Tanztheater.

BIOGRAPHY

The company formed in 2003 after completing Hope Street's Physical Theatre Programme and is based in Liverpool. Tmesis  Theatre aims to bring together some of the best directors/practitioners from the international physical theatre league in order to produce innovative, visually stunning, thought provoking, physical theatre. Momentum have produced three pieces, the trilogy of Tmesis, Memento Mori and Anima. All pieces have toured nationally and internationally in critical acclaim.

At 7:30pm, a presentation of the work-in-progress UNE FILET D'AMOUR from Ira Seidenstein and Marie-Soleil Fortin.

At 8:10pm, Jam – an hour of improvisation with practitioners and participants of the festival – throwing into the mix, live music it will be an outstanding experience of fresh live theatre.

Trained from early childhood in the traditional kyogen acting style of the Japanese No-theatre, the Japanese actor, director and teacher, Yoshi Oida, has created his own acting style, after years of performance with the theatre icon Peter Brook. As part of Brook’s International Theatre Group, Yoshi Oida performed on various stages all over the world. won many awards in performances such as Conference of birds and Mahabharata. Several years ago he began directing plays himself using a unique combination of Eastern and Western approaches to theatre.

"Yoshi Oida shows how the mysteries and secrets of performance are inseparable from a precise, concrete and detailed science learned in the heat of experience. The vital lessons he passes on to us are told with such lightness and grace that typically the difficulties become invisible."

Yoshi’s workshop will focus on Japanese Culture: Japanese acting, religion and traditional martial arts.

Momentum are proud to present this master of theatre for the first time in Liverpool and England's northwest.

MARIA MALONE - Capoeira Class (Free)

Tuesday 10th June, 5:30pm

Introduction to Capoeira for actors and dancers.

Capoeira is a Brazilian artform which can be a dance, a martial art or an expression of traditions and rituals. It encompasses music, movements and a complex philosophy based on its African roots.

Maria Malone is a dance/theatre artist based in Liverpool. Drawn to and fascinated by Capoeira's improvised interactive form and performative elements she has studied Capoeira since 2001 including living and training in Brazil with the most accomplished Masters of the artform. This short lesson will give an introduction to Capoeira focusing on the elements that may be useful and interesting for performers such as improvisation, partner work, strength, grounding and agility.

 

 

TAI CHI with KAM LAU (Free)

Chen style Tai - Chi with Liverpool expert - K am Lau.

Chen Style is the oldest form of Tai Chi in the world today. Kam is a disciple of the standard bearer, Grandmaster Chen Xiao Wang and his school is the only one in the Merseyside specialising in Chen Style.
